Is a confirmed ticket necessary to apply for Chinese VISA

HI, I ahve all the supporting documents for applying Chinese tourist VISA. However, my travel dates are not fixed yet. Is it necessary to have a confirmed ticket? or can I request the consulate that based on my financial standing, I can purchase the tickets after the VISA is granted?

Thank you,
Tharanga

Tharanga, maybe it's difficult for you to get the visa if you can't provide the confirmed ticket. You can also apply for it from a travel agency, and that could be easier.
