About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Start and end in Shanghai?

My question involves two round trip tickets. The first is from U.S. to Shanghai, and the second from Shanghai to Tokyo.
Can I fly to Shanghai, from the U.S., and enjoy the 144-hour visa-free transit policy, then fly fro Shanghai to Tokyo for a week, returning to Shanghai in order to fly back to the US on the return portion of the original round trip ticket?
If so, how much time am I allowed in Shanghai after returning from NRT? Another 144 hours?

Richard, if you fly like US-Shanghai (144 hours)-Japan-Shanghai (144 hours)-US, you will be able to enjoy the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai in both directions. You can stay for another 144 hours in Shanghai when you return from NRT.

Thanks for the response!
Can you clarify, please: Do I need to stay in Japan for a minimum of 144 hours in order to return to Shanghai, and then back to the U.S., and qualify for the 144 hour free transit policy? Or can the visit to Japan be less than 144 hours, before returning to Shanghai, then flying back to the U.S.?

There is no limit on your stay in Japan, be it an hour or a few months. You just can't arrive in China from the same country you depart to (or vice versa).
