About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

LA - Shanghai - LA

If I am reading correctly, does it not count if I am staying less than 144 hours but returning to the US and not another country? Will I need a visa if I am staying in Shanghai?

The travel route LA - Shanghai – LA is not eligible for the free transit policy. You need to apply for a visa then.
