Layover in Shanghai for 17 hrs

I will be traveling from NYC to Tokyo with a layover in Shanghai for 17 hrs. I wish to leave the airport. I have the same arrangement in reverse on the way back (Tokyo to NYC with another layover in Shanghai about 2 weeks later). Must I get a 72 hour visa to leave the airport each time?

Morgan, you can either apply for the 24-hour direct transit or 72-hour direct transit each time, depending on whether the layover is more than 24 hours or not.
