Applying for 6 month visa from Thailand or Kathmandu?

I am an American traveling abroad and wish to spend 3-6 months touring Eastern China on a tourist visa. I have read that US citizens get a 10 year entry permit? I am currently in Chiang Mai, Thailand but will be going to Kathmandu, Nepal. Does it matter where I apply for it? Will I be given different consideration from Thailand, Kathmandu, or United States for my visa duration or as an American do I automatically get the 10 year visa regardless of where I apply from?

Hi Jerry! US citizens can now get the 10-year multiple-entry permit for China. There is no certain rules saying that where you apply for the visa will affect the duration, but I do think there is a connection between the two. I think if you apply from the US or Thailand, you will have a bigger chance to get the 10-year multiple-entry permit. However, you need to indicate on your application form. The consular officer won't give you a 10-year one automatically. They just give it upon your request.

Ok, thanks! I assumed my chances are better from the US, but I am unlikely to head back just to apply for the visa. So you think it is more likely if I apply in Chiang Mai rather than Kathmandu? Any particular rationale? I can do either as I'm in Chiang Mai now but plan to be in Kathmandu in a week.
