About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I am a US passport holder who lives in Thailand. I want to visit China for 3 days.

Will they give me trouble if my return ticket is the same place as where I arrived from?

You need a visa in advance if your ticket is Thailand-China-Thailand.
