About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Our friends and I are traveling through Shanghai, with a short 3 hour layover in Beijing (PEK),

landing in SHA at 11:50 pm. The next morning we are flying with separate tickets to Thailand. When we return to Shanghai, our friends are flying back to the USA within 24hrs, but we will possibly be staying less than 72hrs before we head back to the USA. Do you have any advice on what we might need?

On your return, are you stopping in Beijing again? If so you will need a visa, or limit your stay to only 24 hours in China. If your return flight is non-stop Shanghai to USA (or another country, not China) then you may have 144 hours free transit in Shanghai. It would be helpful if you post your exact itineraries so you can get accurate advice here.
