Flying from Canada to Beijing to Thailand

I would like to travel from Toronto to Beijing round trip, spending 3 days in Beijing then off to Thailand on a separate airline. I plan on flying from Thailand to connect with my return Beijing flight to Toronto some 9 days later, spending the night in Beijing before boarding for home. Would I qualify for the 72hr free visa stay?
