renewal of HKSAR passport

Do I need to go in person to the Chinese consulate in New York to renew my HKSAR passport? Or can I mail in the application and documents? Do I need to surrender my existing passport when I apply? I still need to travel while waiting for the renewal. Thank you.

Sin, you need to go there in person to renew your passport. You need to submit the current passport when you apply for the renewal.
