About:How to Travel to China without a Visa

Is it true you do not need a Chinese Visa if you are going to Shanghai for 6 days or less?

An associate was denied entry into Shanghai, told his visa had expired. He was traveling on business and was going to be there only 4 days. Finally he was told if he is staying less than 6 days and had proof of an airline ticket out, showing the dates then he did not need a visa.

You have to be in transit, otherwise a visa is required regardless of the length of visit. It's highly unlikely your friend reached Chinese immigration. The airline is liable for a fine for transporting passengers with incorrect documentation.

Lonnie, if your travel route is country A-Shanghai (6 days)-country B, you will be able to use the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai, and then no visa will be required.
