M visa valid for non- business exchange and programme

If your M type is still valid, you can use it to attend the seminar and you just need to exit from China before the M type expires. If it will expire when you attend the seminar, you can go to the local Exit and Entry Administration to change the M type to an F type by providing your passport, passport copy, application form, recent photo, form of temporary residence registration, and an invitation letter from the host of the seminar.
