About:China Work Visa

I'm planning to go to China to apply for work there.

Meaning I don't have any invitation from any company in China. Do I need a Z type or the tourist type is fine?

You cannot apply for work Z type now based on what you said. You can apply for a tourist L type for China to find a job. After finding a job, you can apply for a work Z type to work in China.
