Do we need a visa for Shanghai? We are there for the day.

We are flying from Melbourne to Hong Kong and staying in Hong Kong for 5 days and then taking a 14 day cruise from Hong Kong to Tokyo. We stop off at Taipei, Okinawa, Shanghai, Nagasaki, Kobe and Tokyo.

Peter, if you take the cruise from Okinawa to Shanghai and then head for Nagasaki, I'm afraid you are not eligible for the 144hrs free transit policy. However, if you book a tour for Shanghai in advance, it's possible that you can enjoy the 15-day free entry policy for cruise passengers. In this case, the entry permit for Shanghai is not required.
