About:Visa Policy of China

US Passport rountrip from US to HKG without CN Visa.

Can i visit Shanghai without visa for up to 72 hrs.

For example. Arrive in HKG from US stay for two nights. Visit Shanghai for 48 hrs. Return to HKG from Shanghai and depart back to US from HKG

Sorry, you route is not fine, but if you depart from UK to HK first, and then leave for Shanghai, then depart from Shanghai directly back to the US, you will be qualified for the 144hrs free transit in Shanghai.
