You need a visa for this itinerary, because of the stop in CAN

That's why you need a Chinese visa. Even if you stayed on the same plane you would still need a visa. For 72 hours you must fly NON-STOP Country A - China - Country B. If you have two stops in China you are limited to 24 hours on Chinese soil. You need to either get a visa or change your itinerary.

Just to be clear, you do not need a visa on 24th February, when you can have 24 hours free transit. But you may be denied boarding in Sydney on 9th March if you do not have a visa. And if you only get a single-entry visa DO NOT allow the immigration in PEK to cancel it on 24th February because you will need it on 10th March in CAN.
