About:Policy for Foreigners with Immediate Family Living in China

Do I need to even bother with getting the Q1 visa?

Can I go to China with a one way ticket using my L type, and still apply for the Temporary Residence Permit? It would save me money and time. My wife is a Chinese citizen living in mainland China. Thank you.

It is possible for you to get a Q1 type.
You can enter China with your L type, but you cannot get the temporary residence permit on an L type.
Only when you enter with a Q1 type, you can apply for the temporary residence permit.
