Hi , I will be travelling with a family in july 2017 from uk to Bangkok then to Hong Kong and back to uk.
Can we qualify for 72 or 144 hour free visa if we travel by train from Hong Kong to guangzhou and return back to Hong-Kong.

No, since that's not transit.

The inbound journey must be at guangzhou airport. Outbound also has to be from guangzhou however you may travel freely within the Guangdong Province during your 72hour transit. 144hour transit visa is unavailable.
