About:Chinese Embassy in Australia

I am going to Shanghai for a 3 day conference

but want to arrive 4 days early to visit Shanghai and Chengdu. A total stay in China of 7 days. I will fly from Sydney to Shanghai and then on to Hong Kong. What visa should I apply for and is it permissible to travel privately from Shanghai to Chengdu?

You can apply for a business M type for that. You can travel privately from Shanghai to Chengdu on a business M type.
