About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

I have to transfer flights to Thailand but i have a layover of 16 hours.

What is the range of area where two people can go if they do not get a travel visa while in the city? Do we have to stay in the airport? or can we branch out to the surrounding area of the city?

Josie, you can enjoy the 24 hour direct transit in China. You can apply for a free temporary stay permit at the airport, and then you can go to the city for a visit.
