About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

USA to Shanghai and return to Canada eligible for 144-hour visa?

Hello, I am thinking about flying from New York to Shanghai and then stay for 2 days in Shanghai. Afterwards I plan to fly to Toronto in Canada. Am I still eligible for the 144-hour free transit since although US and Canada are separate countries, they are in the same region. Thanks! Otherwise I might have to apply tourist visa

its per country, not continents , you can fly from hong kong ( which is part of the same land mass as shanghai )to shanghai ( with is ALSO part of china ) and then off to another 3rd country... it doesn't matter as long as it is not the same (USA) country you flew from.

Just to clarify, as I am very confused with all this.
We don't need visa to get into Hong Kong. So, after being in Hong Kong, can we take the fly to Shanghai, stay 2 nights and then the cruise without problems?
End of the cruise, come back into China and fly to UK on day after?

Does it work for us because the cruise is leaving China for few days?

If you will travel like HK-Shanghai (2 days)- a third country or region rather than HK –Shanghai ( within 144 hours) – UK, you will be able to enjoy the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai each time.
