Ryan, no, you are not eligible for the 72 hour free transit if you travel like that. A transit G type is needed.

Ok thanks, I am going to buy a 1 way from shanghai to Seoul (starting in San Francisco - Shanghai). Therefore I quality for the 144 hour free transit correct? Do I need to apply at san francisco airport ahead of time or can I get the visa upon arrival in Shanghai? Also do I need to leave via the same airport or is PVG arrival SHA departure ok? Thanks

Ryan, yes, it is correct. You need to inform the airlines that you want to use the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai when you board the flight in San Francisco. After arriving in Shanghai, you can go to the transit counter to apply for the 144 hour free transit.
You can enter and leave via different airports in Shanghai.
