i was hoping to go to the mountain from leshan after viewing the buddha in the morning.

And taking the cable car to the top. Sleeping in a monastery at the summit and hiking back down in one day the next day after watching the sunrise. I will be doing this next week in January. Is this possible and what should I be aware of or how should I accomplish this?

Jon, it is totally possible. I remember there are buses from Leshan Buddha Scenic Area to Emeishan. The bus fare is CNY15 and it takes around 40min to the destination. Upon arrival, take the cable car to go uphill.Make sure you take warm clothes as the temperature can be very low at the top of the mountain. Enjoy your trip!
