About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

24 hrs in Beijing

We are connecting through Beijing from BAngkok for our Toronto flight and have the day there. Do we need a visa to leave the airport to visit the Great Wall? I've read so much conflicting information that I"m not clear on what the answer or requirements are.
Thank you
Gina

Gina, so your flight route is Bangkok to Beijing and then to Toronto? Actually, you qualify for the 72-hour free transit policy in Beijing if you are a Canadian. During the layover, you can go and see the Great Wall.

Yes Lindsay that is correct our flight is bangkok-beijing-toronto. This is good news and great to have a clear answer! Do we need to ask for this when we arrive in beijing at customs and do we need it in our paas port when we arrive back to the airport? Where do we exit so we don't end up in a part of the airport where we can't leave? I read somewhere else we need a stopover permit from border authorities at the airport. Has this changed? Thanks

Because your layover in Beijing is less than 24 hours, you may need to apply for a temporary stay permit which is free of charge at the immigration office inside the airport, and then, you can go out to the city for a visit.
