3 day visit to Shanghai arriving by cruise ship

We are planning a visit to Shanghai in April at the end of a cruise. The ship berths in Shanghai & we would like to stay for 3 nights. What kind of visa do we require & do we need to apply in person at a Chinese embassy or can it be done by post? We stay quite far away from major cities that may have a Chinsee embassy.
Thank you

Wee, if the curise ship enters Shanghai from a foreign country and after your 3-day stay there, you will leave Shanghai for another country, you qualify for the 144hrs free transit in Shanghai.
