About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

Let's say I have a one way ticket from Melbourne to Guangzhou

and another one way ticket from Guangzhou to Bangkok 2 days after my arrival with different airlines. So I want to use the transit visa. How do they check my onward ticket? Since I will not have it physically, is the reference number enough?

I think the itinerary with confirmation code should suffice, but I would print it out in advance.
