Traveling from USA to Shanghai and BEijing

I'm traveling from US to Shanghai on June 2017. I'm staying 3 days in Shanghai, then flying to Beijing and staying for 4 days in Beijing, then flying from Beijing to Hong Kong. Do I need a travel visa?

Yes, you need to apply for a tourist L type in advance of your trip.

What if I just stay 3 days in Beijing and 3 days in shangai, Will I still need a visa?

You still need it. If you only stay 6 days in Shanghai or only stay 3 days in Beijing, you don't need it.
