About:China Transit Visa

What if I plan to stay in China for longer than 10 days before my transit to Thailand?

L visas require round trip tickets. G types only last up to 20 days (double entry). Is there not another way to stay longer (30 days or more) in China as a tourist and still be able to fly to another country other than your original point of embarkment?

The 10-year L type issued to Americans permits stays of up to 60 days. You probably should provide your flight from Thailand to the US and write them an explanation stating that you'll be travelling to Thailand as a part of your trip.
