About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

My Wife and I are UK Citizens, we want to stop off in Shanghai en-route to Australia.

We are travelling to Australia in Jan 2017 and want to stop-over in Shanghai for 24hrs to meet with a friend... we plan to go to hotel and visit the city before flying on to Sydney.. is there anywhere or anything i need to register on before checking in at my UK departure airport?
