Does a tourist visa allow a second entry to China?

My daughter and I are planning a trip to China in January. While we are there we will take a roundtrip flight from Shanghai to Bangkok to visit friends there. Will our tourist L type allow us to enter and leave China twice? Also, my son is working in Shanghai and for part of our travels in China he will join us. Is the tourist L type best for this? Do I understand that we need to have our airfare booked and our accommodations secured for all the days we are in China before we apply for the entry permit? It is just over one month before we leave. Will they arrive in time?

Beth, if you only apply a single entry tourist L type, it only allows you to enter and leave China once. However, I advise you to take the following visit so your single entry is enough. First, you use the single entry to enter Shanghai and leave for Bangkok. Then, for your second visit, if you fly from Bangkok to Shanghai and leave for your country after six days, you can use the 144h free transit.

L type is best for your travel purpose. If you have an invitation letter from your son, you don't have to book flight and accommodations before you do the application. The application usually takes four working days, so I think you have enough time to do it. Don't worry.

Can I do what you say with entry in the opposite order--enter China and then within a couple days do the trip to Bangkok and spend more time in China after that trip?

Why apply for a single-entry visa if you can get the 10-year, multiple entry visa? It costs the same!
