About:Shanghai Pudong Airport

Hi, We arrive from UK to PVG at 4pm, then depart to Japan the following morning at 7am.

1) Do we need to collect our baggage again and re-check in day we fly to Japan?
2) Can we use the airport hotel within the terminal and do we need to book in advance? (if so, where can we do this?)
3) Can we leave the airport to stay elsewhere if required?

1). If you travel with China Eastern, Swiss Airline, Virgin Atlantic Airways, Air New Zealand, or Lufthansa, you needn't claim your luggage. Otherwise, you should collect your luggage, and check in again.

2). Yes, you can stay at the Hourly Hotel at International Departure Hall, T2. International passengers can check in the hotel after going through Security Check. It costs about CNY 400 per night. The reservation hotline is 86-021-18516191445, or 68349033-2701.

3). Certainly! You are eligible to the 24 hours visa-free transit policy. You can leave the airport after applying for a stay permit. The Dazhong Airport Hotel is located between T1 and T2, at No. 6001, Yingbin Avenue. It costs CNY 500 to 600 per night. The telephone number is 86-021-38799999.

Okay, thanks! Just to follow on from that third point - do we apply for a stay visa when we land and is this a lengthy process?

No, you don't need to apply for a visa. You can enjoy 24 hours visa free policy. But, if you wanna leave the transit area, you need to apply for the Stay Permit at the airport.
