Chinese Temporary Residence Permit cancellation

I've just finished my contract but my old agency is trying to force me to stay and has been threatening to cancel my residence permit if I do.
Obviously this is a huge problem as I want to work in China for longer.
Is it possible for them to cancel it without them having my passport? I really need to know.

Actually, if you don’t want to work there any more, you should cancel the work permit and residence permit. After you find a new job, you can re-apply for a new residence permit.
They are able to inform the exit and entry administration about your situation, and in this case, the exit and entry administration may cancel the residence permit without your passport.
