About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit

can I combine 2 separate tickets to use a 72 hours free transit policy?

I have already bought my ticket from shanghai to Mexico,but I was thinking to visit Japan 4 days before my flight to Mexico and then buy another flight from Japan to Shanghai,stay there around 10 hours and than catch my flight to Mexico. Can I do that since those are 2 separate tickets,it is not a direct transit?

Dina, you can do that. Separate tickets are fine. As long as you meet the requirement for the 144 hour free transit, you can enjoy the 144 hour free transit in Shanghai.
