Judith, you don't need to pay tax when exiting PRC but I'm not sure about the exact duty-free value when entering US customs. So, it is advised you contact the US customs in advance.
For your reference, PRC citizen is allowed to take purchased products of less than CNY5,000 without paying tax when entering PRC customs.0
