About:Visa Policy of China

Round trip to Shanghai for frequent flyer miles.

Do I need a visa to fly to and return from Shanghai airport within 24 hours just to get frequent flyer miles? Or can I apply for 72 hour free transit if I returning to same city?
Example; fly from Chicago to Shanghai and return the same or next day back to Chicago.
Does this require an entry permit in advance?

David, if you fly to Shanghai and then return direction without leaving the transit zone, you don't need the entry permit. You can't apply for the 72h free transit as you will return to the same city.
