When can you apply for a visa?

Hi!
Myself and a friend are planning a 7-day trip to China, arriving via Japan, sometime in June next year.
We were wondering whether we could apply for the entry permit now, or would we have to wait closer to the time?
Also, is the 3 month coverage the minimum?

Louise, you can apply for it 3 month earlier before your trip, but usually, you are advised to apply for it one month prior to your trip.
