US Citizen traveling Thailand to USA through Shanghai

We are arriving in Shanghai early in the morning and leaving late in the afternoon same day. We want to leave the airport for at least a couple of hours. We are flying standby. Does the 24 hour direct transit still apply?

Betty, if you fly standby, I’m afraid you cannot enjoy the 24 hour direct transit there. Usually, a confirmed ticket is needed when you want to enjoy free transit. You may need to apply for a tourist L type or transit G type in advance.
