72-Hour Visa-Free Transit in Guangzhou

I plan to travel from the United States to Nepal in December. My itinerary is Los Angeles to Shanghai to Guangzhou to Kathmandu. I plan to spend the night in Guangzhou at a hotel outside of the airport and then travel to Nepal the next day. Since I have a stop in Shanghai (without leaving the airport), will I still be able to take advantage of the free transit?

I retrace the path on my return leg, with a planned stop in Guangzhou for a night before continuing my travel home.

Brent, if your total layover time in Shanghai and Guangzhou is less than 24 hours, you can enjoy the 24 hour direct transit. In this case, you don’t need to apply for an entry permit.
When you return, you can enjoy the 24 hour direct transit in Guangzhou.

My total time in China from scheduled arrival in Shanghai to my scheduled departure in Guangzhou for Kathmandu is 24 hours and 15 minutes. Since I'm just over 24 hours total in China, do I need to apply for a tourist or transit G type in advance of departure from the United States?

If so, you can contact with Shanghai or Guangzhou airport immigration office to inquire about that. If the immigration office says no, you don’t need to provide G type or L type.
