Travel in China without passport

Hello,
I am a student in Lanzhou currently holding an X1 long-term visa. I would like to travel on October 3 to Nanjing in China by plane but I am just applying for the permit on September 19, and I don't receive my passport in this time. So I can travel in China without my passport ?

Usually, the passport is needed when you board the plane. If possible, you can contact with the exit and entry administration of the local PSB and see if there is any way to solve this problem.
