About:Kunming Airport

I am travelling from HK to kolkata via Kunming in China Eastern Airlines.

I was told at the checking counter in Hongkong that I will have to take my chin in baggage out and check in once again- there is no direct checkin to kolkata. I do not have a China visa. Is there a problem me collecting the baggage and then checking in for my kolkata flight?
