8-Hour Layover in Beijing traveling from Thailand to America?

I am American, and will have an 8-hour layover in Beijing between my flights from Phuket, Thailand back to the US. What do I need in this scenario, if I want to leave the airport just to see the Great Wall?

Jill, you can enjoy the 24 hour direct transit in Beijing, so no entry permit is needed.
You can just apply for a temporary stay permit at the immigration office inside Beijing airport, and then you can leave the airport to the Wall for a visit. The stay permit is free of charge.
