About:240-Hour Visa-Free Transit

China/Thailand Trip

I am flying from the USA into Shanghai on the morning of September 13, to stay with a friend. We are then taking a flight to Thailand on the morning of September 15. We'll be in Thailand until Sept 20, when I fly back into Shanghai and then head to the other major airport for my flight returning to the USA. Can I do the 72hr or 144hr free transit? I'm barely going to be in China and I have all the flights booked to prove so. I would like to avoid spending $140 on a visa if it's not necessary. Any advice is appreciated, thank you!

Kristi, you can enjoy the free transit in Shanghai for both legs of your trip. You don’t need to apply for an entry permit in advance.

The thing I'm worried about now is that my flight in, and out of China, has a layover in Beijing. According to some things I've read, that makes me ineligible for the 72 or 144 transit policy.

If you will stop in both Shanghai and Beijing, you cannot enjoy the free transit. A transit G visa or tourist L visa is needed.
