Kevin, you cannot use the 144 hour free transit because of your nationality.
But if your stay in Shanghai is less than 24 hours and you won’t go back to the country you just came from, you can enjoy the 24 hour direct transit in Shanghai, in this case, no entry permit is needed. Otherwise, you have to apply for an entry permit beforehand.

Ship departure date is 9/8, so it's more than 24 hrs. The cruise line won't give me a refund or credit, what else we can do so we can come to Shanghai?? please help.

If so, you need to apply for a transit G visa or tourist L visa. The cruise ship ticket can be used for the application, or you can get an invoice from the cruise.

Thanks Roosevelt. Can we apply for that at the Shanghai airport since we have no time here in the US?
