Buying two one way tickets

I am planning a tour around Asia and would like to include China on my trip. I want to fly from the US to China and depart out of China to Vietnam. Will having these two one-way tickets (arrival and departure) be sufficient to obtain a Chinese visa? Or is a round trip ticket required to obtain a visa?

It doesn’t have to be round trip air tickets. Two one-way tickets are sufficient to apply for Chinese visa.
