Transit visa in Hong Kong for 16 hours

Hi

My wife and I (Australian citizens) have a 16 hour transit time in Hong Kong between Melbourne and Rome flights.
Same transit time on the return journey.
Can we go into Hong Kong during the transit? Do we need entry permits? If so, what does this cost for the transit?

Thanks
Martin

Martin, you can go into HK during the transit. You don’t need any entry permit because Australian passport holders are allowed to enter HK freely for a stay of less than 90 days.
