Is it MANDATORY that all entries must be TYPED on China visa application??

Can't I just hand write the information onto the application form? Or MUST I type everything in? I don't have a typewriter. Does anyone know where I can get the PDF application form in a format where I can enter the information onto it online? (The PDF on the China Embassy/Consulate websites are all PDF files that do not allow information to be entered in.
