And hop off at the zoo then get back on to continue to the summer palace. is this possible? If so, would you know where to purchase tickets? Do you know where the boat takes off from and do you know it's operating hours? We are only planning on a few hours for the zoo as we have been to plenty of them in the States. Please Advise-thanks!

Sure! You can take the boat, hop off at the zoo, and get back onto the boat to Summer Palace. The boats depart from Emperor's Boat Wharf (Huangdichuan Wharf) at the rear lake of Exhibition Center. The boats are available from 10:00 to 16:00. You can purchase the ticket on the spot before boarding. :)
