15 hour layover in Shanghai

Hi there,
Destination: Chiang Mai, Thailand
We have a 15 hour layover in Shanghai from 7pm-10am next day.
We have booked a hotel five minutes away from the airport by shuttle.
Do we need a 72 hour visa for this? or a Temporary Stay permit? Will a Temporary stay permit allow us to leave the airport?
Thanks,
Allison

Allison, you are eligible for the 24 hour direct transit in Shanghai. You need to apply for a temporary stay permit at the immigration office and then you can leave the airport to the hotel.
