I just got a job teaching in Shanghai but my boyfriend wants to come too.

What visa does he apply for and how would be go about getting it?

Kim, he can only apply for the tourist L type because you two are not married. Just prepare the required documents, like passport, passport copy, application form, recent photo, and your invitation letter. Then submit the application to the respective consulate or embassy. If he wants to work in China as well, he should apply for a Z type.

If he wants to work doesn't he need a job before entering China to get the Z type? Can he apply for it without having a job before entering?

Only when he found a job in PRC can he get the relevant documents to apply for a work Z type.
