About:72-Hour Visa-Free Transit FAQ

Does it have to be an "official" layover?

I have a ticket from Los Angeles to Seoul with a layover in Beijing. I plan to take advantage of the visa-free policy, but my layover is only 18 hours, and I'd love to stay a little longer. I'm wondering if I purchased another ticket (to Japan instead of Seoul) that leaves the same airport within 72 hours, and used that instead of the second leg of my first ticket, would that cause problems? Is that allowed? In other words, does the layover have to be "official," decided by the airline, or can I make my own layover with two separate tickets?
Thank you.

Tara, I think it's fine. You need to tell the immigration officer that you have changed your plan and will fly to Japan instead of Seoul when passing through the immigration counter. You had better double check this with the airline.
