About:China Visa Exemption

Permit for a short stay

I am travelling from Dallas to Hong Kong (will be there 4 days), then getting a flight from Hong Kong To Beijing-will be there 23.5 hrs, will then depart to Tokyo-
I am planning on going into the city and staying there overnight.If I am understanding the transit visa, I qualify for the 72 or 24 hour hour free transit?
Am I correct?

Yes, you qualify for the free transit policy in Beijing and you are allowed to go into the city to have a tour.
